RC Building Day 1 - First Cuts

Continuing on with Day 1 of festivities, it's time to cut my first car. Is it the mikucar? No way. Since I got two Impreza shells to work with I'll practice on both before putting the blade to the BMW.

I should've put this on a darker surface, but no matter. This is what the shell looks like before. I stared it at for a good 20 minutes before working up the courage to start cutting.

impreza_shell_uncut.JPGI have an xacto knife with a #11 blade and the pair of scissors that came with this morning's shipment. Oh yeah, 150 grit sandpaper to smooth out mistakes as well.

impreza_shell_fl.JPGThe first cut wasn't actually that bad. I decided to work the wheel wells by attacking from both directions. Since the plastic got in my way a bunch of times the wheel doesn't really look that round. I'm pretty sure after a few runs around the house I can blame it on wear and tear.

impreza_shell_back.JPGThe back bumper was by far the easiest piece to go. The advice I went with was to use the knife to cut into the grooves as a guide and run the scissors against it. This actually worked quite well, so well in fact the back just popped off without the scissors! Damn I'm good.

impreza_shell1_finished.JPGAnd here is the finished product. I can't run straight lines worth shit so the trim between the wheels is kinda wobbly. I haven't drilled any holes yet as I don't know where the mounting poles go. For now I'll just charge the batteries and see how that goes. Cross fingers and hope my house doesn't burn down.. oh wait, I got that charging bag.
